Navigating a Tough Day with Resilience

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

In the whirlwind of a forgetful morning, where there already seems as though there's not enough time in the day, the resilience within was put to the ultimate test. Racing against the clock, the weight of stress settled in as I realized I was not only running late for work but had left my computer behind – a lifeline to my daily tasks.

Amidst the frustration and self-blame, I took a deep breath, recognizing that this stressful morning was an opportunity to exercise resilience. It wasn't about avoiding challenges but facing them head-on and bouncing back stronger. This setback became a chance to prove that one busy morning does not define the entirety of the day or my ability to overcome.

Recalling the fascinating Kurt Richter study, I marveled at the transformative power of resilience. Richter found that rats, facing near-drowning conditions, could endure remarkably when holding onto a glimmer of hope. When dropped into water, rats will first tread water on average for 15 minutes before giving up. If Richter was to then take one of the same rescued rats and, after a short rest, drop them back into water, they could now tread water for 60+ …HOURS! This study echoes the importance of maintaining hope in the face of adversity.

Reflecting on the power of resilience in my recovery journey, I realized it is a skill that can be cultivated. Forgetful mornings become the training ground for building resilience muscles. Each challenge, when faced with resilience, transforms into a stepping stone on the path of recovery.

So, in the face of life's storms and the relentless ticking of the clock, I will try to remember this challenging morning that became a testament to resilience. It's in those moments of adversity that we discover our inner strength, rising strong and transforming challenges into opportunities for growth on the journey of recovery.
